Autism Spectrum Disorders & Asperger's Syndrome: Tips for Helping

Did you know that Asperger's Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorders are having a major impact on our community?

It may seem like you are hearing more and more about these issues. And guess what, it isn't just because there is more media attention, or because we are getting better at detecting it. All the research is showing that there is in fact an increase in the incidence in autism spectrum disorders.

And families, new moms, new dads, grandparents, and others are terrified, confused, and unsure what they can do to help these toddlers, kids, adolescents, and young adults who are impacted.

Here are a few quick tips on ways you can help:

- Understand that this is a real issue. Don't minimize, deny, or blame parents for what is happening. - Get educated if you have a family member or friend who is impacted. And then, just listen and support them. - Offer support. Families impacted by autism spectrum disorders have a lot of balls they are juggling and while it is hard for them to accept it- they often really need support- even if it is just someone to go for a walk with once in awhile- or a late night cup of tea out back while their child is sleeping. - Don't poo-poo their efforts to give their kids the best experience even if you don't understand why their family is going gluten-free, dye-free, etc. Also, don't force articles on them that "if you just do this- your child will be cured." They have been doing the research!

There are probably 100 other tips we could give, but we will leave it at that!

How are we at Counseling Modesto helping the community? We have a new counselor! Ever have one of those "duh" moments?

So... this might seem a little off-topic but stay with me.... When I was a baby, every time someone gave me whole milk I threw up. My mom had told me this at various times throughout my life. Usually in reference to, "I always told them don't give her milk or she'll throw up, and every time- they gave you milk."

Later, in junior high, I developed the most terrible tummy aches. Went to the doctor, and was diagnosed as lactose intolerance.

As the years went by, these symptoms went away and I slowly built a love for greek yogurt and other yummy things.

And then a weird thing happened. I stopped eating dairy regularly. At first, I wasn't even sure why. And then, every time I had dairy I began to notice I would get an itchy throat, and watery eyes, and start to sneeze....

These are symptoms I had off and on for years as "allergies" and they had gone away... and now they were back... but only when I ate dairy...

I told my mom "Weirdest thing- I think I might be allergic to dairy!" She said "that doesn't surprise me at all!" I looked at her shocked... why wouldn't she be surprised? I was surprised and confused.... and then she reminded me of my history with milk.

Yep, she had to remind me, because I had forgotten.

Are there certain experiences or things you have to try over and over again before you realize they just aren't working for you? Are you stuck in an old cycle of denying the truth... that maybe, just maybe (through no fault of your own) something in your life just doesn't jive?

Sometimes it just takes a lot of trial and error to figure out what does and does not work. And you know what, I think that is ok! I think what is interesting is that if we aren't paying attention, if we aren't listening closer to our body- we can miss some really important information that can make life go a bit smoother.

Counseling can sometimes give us this great window to explore and identify what does, and does not fit in our life in the here and now.
