FAQs > FAQs about Counseling > What if I am not sure about counseling?
I know you probably have questions about what counseling is all about. Sometimes it is hard to make that first phone call not knowing what to expect or even what to ask. Here are a few answers to common questions I get asked by clients. Feel free to call me at (209) 602-1513 with other questions!

Going to counseling the first time (or returning to counseling) can be scary. You may not know what to expect, you may fear being labeled as "crazy," or you may have only seen images of counseling on television with a brown leather couch, and a man with a beard. Trust me, I don't have a beard or a brown couch!
I will do my best to walk you through the process and answer any questions that you have. I see counseling as a service to you. If your needs are not being met, I am very open to making changes to ensure that you are getting what you want and need. If that means connecting you with another therapist, making a change to the way we are working, or even making a plan for a break from counseling, we can do that. You should come to counseling (and stay there) because of free choice and a genuine desire to make changes in your life.
Our first session is really a consultation session that allows us to get to know one another. You are under no obligation to continue with counseling if it doesn't feel like a good fit for you.
